The Game Boy is Nintendo's handheld system that followed it's Game & Watch series. Introduced in 1980 it mixed product features of the original Nintendo Entertainment System with Game & Watch systems. The puzzle game Tetris was bundled with the first systems.
At the time of its launch, the Game Boy competed against the Game Gear by Sega, NEC's TurboExpress, and the Atari Lynx. Nintendo's Game Boy became a huge victory for Nintendo. Together with the Game Boy Color there has been a combined total of 118 million units sold worldwide . The United States launch of the unit sold out of a million units within just a few weeks.
